Kyriacos Kalli is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics within the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Cyprus University of Technology. He leads the Photonics and Optical Sensors Research Laboratory (PhOSLab) and previously served as department chairperson and a member of the university's Governance Council. His prior appointments include Associate Professor at Cyprus University of Technology, Lecturer at the Higher Technical Institute, and Researcher at the University of Cyprus. Since joining Cyprus University of Technology in 2008, he has contributed to various research projects, including the CYQCI (Cyprus Quantum Communication Infrastructure) project focused on quantum cybersecurity.
Kalli earned his B.Sc. (Hons) in Theoretical Physics in 1988 and Ph.D. in Physics in 1992 from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, with doctoral research on linear and non-linear phenomena in optical fibres. His research specializations include optical fibre lasers and sensors, femtosecond laser micro-fabrication of photonic devices, and plasmonics. He has produced 280 journal and conference publications and is co-author of the book 'Fiber Bragg Gratings: Fundamentals and Applications in Telecommunications and Sensing', along with multiple book chapters. Notable achievements encompass delivering a plenary presentation at SPIE Photonics Europe in 2012 and 20 invited talks at international venues such as IEEE colloquia, CLEO Pacific Rim, ECOC, and events in China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Canada, and Australia. Kalli chaired the European Workshop on Optical Fibre Sensors (EWOFS) in 2019 and the Workshop on Specialty Optical Fibres (WSOF) in 2017, and has long served as chair of the SPIE conference on Microstructured and Specialty Optical Fibres. He holds memberships as a Chartered Physicist (C.Phys.) with the Institute of Physics (IOP), member of IEEE, and Senior Member of the Optical Society of America (OSA). Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation.
