Kurt Debattista is a Professor in Engineering at the University of Warwick's Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), serving as Director of Research Degrees since 2019. He was promoted to Reader in 2019, having previously been Associate Professor (2012-2018) and Assistant Professor (2007-2012) at WMG. Earlier, he held a Research Associate position at the University of Bristol (2006-2007) after obtaining his PhD in computer science there in 2006. Debattista earned his B.Sc. in mathematics and computer science, M.Sc. in psychology, and M.Sc. in computer science from the University of Malta, where he served as Assistant Lecturer from 1999 to 2003. From 2009 to 2015, he was Technical Director at goHDR.
His research interests encompass computer graphics, parallel computing, high dynamic range imaging, high-fidelity rendering, applied artificial intelligence, creative technologies, vision applications, and applied perception. With over 5,800 citations on Google Scholar, Debattista has made significant contributions to these fields. Key publications include 'Deep HDR Hallucination for Inverse Tone Mapping' (2021), co-authored with Dimitrios Marnerides and Thomas Bashford-Rogers; 'A review on chemometric techniques with infrared, Raman spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging for plastic waste sorting' (2022); 'Addressing inconsistent labeling in cross-image medical image segmentation' (2025); and 'Empirical evaluation of the effectiveness of attack graphs' (2018). He has engaged in industry collaborations with Jaguar Land Rover, Arup, and Lear Corporation. Debattista leads postgraduate modules such as Games Engineering (WM9M4-15), Programming and Fundamental Algorithms (WM908-15), and Games Engine Design and Development (WM9M5-15). He also participates in university committees, including as a co-opted member of the Board of Graduate Studies.
