About Kerstin

Kerstin Klipstein-Grobusch, MSc in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Bonn, MSc in Epidemiology from Erasmus University Rotterdam, and PhD in Epidemiology from Erasmus University Rotterdam, is an epidemiologist and nutrition scientist with over 25 years of experience in international research and research capacity building in epidemiology, implementation science, public and global health. She is Associate Professor of Global Health and Head Global Health at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, Department of Global Public Health and Bioethics, University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands. Additional appointments include Associate Professor in Circulatory Health at UMC Utrecht and Visiting Professor at the School of Public Health, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, focusing on research and capacity strengthening.

Her research centers on the etiology, prevention, and management of cardiometabolic and vascular diseases, double burden of malnutrition, and multiple long-term chronic conditions including communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries. She is the Utrecht-based principal investigator for implementation science projects including PEN-CONNECT strengthening integrated care for hypertension, diabetes, and mental disorders in Mozambique; iHEART-SA integrating heart health in HIV care in South Africa; and SCUBY scaling-up care for diabetes and hypertension in vulnerable populations. Capacity building initiatives encompass non-communicable disease epidemiology through CAPSTONE in West Africa and IS4NCDs. Having supervised and mentored over 125 Master's, PhD, and postdoctoral fellows, she has authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications. Key publications include "Applying the Behavior Change Wheel to develop strategies to integrate hypertension and HIV care in South African urban primary care clinics" (2026), "Prevalence, diagnostic coverage, medication treatment, and glycaemic control of diabetes and associated factors in Cambodia" (2026), "Patterns and clusters of diet in relation to metabolic syndrome among adults in Ubungo (urban) and Kilindi (rural) districts, Tanzania" (2026), and "Determinants, barriers, and facilitators of healthcare access for patients with hypertension in rural Ghana" (2025). She is Editor of Global Heart journal of the World Heart Federation, Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the STOP-NCD NIHR Global Health Research Center, and Executive Board Member of the European Global Health Research Institutes Network.
