Dr. Katie Hotko is a Lecturer and Associate Lecturer in Creative Arts in Initial Teacher Education in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University, based at the Gold Coast campus in C5.38. She holds a Bachelor of Education (Honours) and a PhD, both from Southern Cross University. Her PhD thesis, titled "We make art and it makes us: An A/r/tographic exploration of generalist primary teachers’ creative self-beliefs," applied Whiteheadian process philosophy and a/r/tography to inquire into creative action and self-beliefs via art-making. Dr. Hotko serves as Honours Course Coordinator, First Year Coordinator, and Marker in the Faculty of Education. She is an active member of the Sustainability, Environmental, and Arts in Education (SEAE) Research Centre. Her academic interests focus on creative self-beliefs among generalist primary teachers, a/r/tography, arts education, creativity, and rendering visual arts accessible to everyone. A self-taught artist, she works to democratize the arts, promoting inclusivity and accessibility for all people. Her research contributes to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Hotko has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications. Key journal articles include "Hopeful pedagogies in precarious times" (International Journal of Education through Art, 2025), "Creative Self-Beliefs and the Ecologies of A/r/tographic Knowing: Generalist Primary Teachers Developing Praxical Creativity" (2025), "(Re)envisioning Online Arts Education Content Delivery in Initial Teacher Education During COVID-19" (2024, with Katie Burke et al.), "Propositional A/r/tography: An Analytical Protocol" (2022, with Alexandra Lasczik et al.), and "water/watery/watering: Concepts for Theorising in Environmental Education" (2020, with Alexandra Lasczik et al.). Selected book chapters are "A/r/tography as Teacher in Movement and Materiality" (2024, with Jemma Peisker), "Sharing stories of a/r/tography professional learning for generalist primary teachers" (2025, with Sarah Brooke), "Walking A/r/tography with youth at risk: mapping movement and place" (2022, with Alexandra Lasczik et al.), and "Site/sight/insight: becoming a socioecological learner through collaborative artmaking practices" (with David Rousell et al.). She delivers workshops on tools like Canva and PowerPoint for creating posters, infographics, and presentations.
