Dr. Katherine Power is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law at The University of Queensland. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy from Lancaster University, a Certificate of LOTE, ESL and TESOL Curriculum and Pedagogy from the University of Cambridge, and a Certificate of Education in Leadership from the University of British Columbia. Power joined The University of Queensland in 2018 as a Lecturer, advancing to Senior Lecturer in 2023, following her tenure as an Instructor at the University of British Columbia from 2011 to 2018. She previously served as Secretary of the International Gender and Language Association. Her academic interests center on critical discourse analysis, examining how language constructs meaning, identities, and power dynamics in organizational, media, and political contexts.
Power's research focuses on sustainability in the arts and culture sector, gender equity, political crisis communication including COVID-19 responses, and scholarship of teaching and learning. She collaborated with organizations such as Theatre Network Australia, Queensland Ballet, and La Boite Theatre to develop the "Creating out Loud" peer coaching program for arts workers. In 2021, she was awarded an 18-month Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship worth AUD$90,000 to aid arts sector recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. She has received a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. Key publications include the co-edited book Discourse Analysis and Austerity: Critical Studies from Economics and Linguistics (Routledge, 2019); "Constructing COVID-19: A corpus-informed analysis of prime ministerial crisis response communication by gender" (Discourse & Society, 2022); "‘Sustainability’ and the performing arts: discourse analytic evidence from Australia" (Poetics, 2021); and "Women in business media: a critical discourse analysis of representations of women in Forbes, Fortune and Bloomberg Businessweek, 2015-2017" (CADAAD Journal, 2019). Her contributions extend to public commentary in The Conversation on topics like arts burnout and political politeness, and conference presentations on First Nations charters and peer coaching.
