Katherine Hammond is a faculty member in the Humanities Department at Columbus State Community College, where she teaches Art History and Humanities as part of the Arts and Culture discipline. She holds a B.A. in Art History from Ohio University, an M.A. in Art History from Ohio University, and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Ohio University. Hammond joined Columbus State Community College in August 2022 as a Humanities Instructor and has since demonstrated exceptional dedication to teaching and institutional service. In 2024, she was honored with the Distinguished Teacher Award after nearly three years of service. She contributes significantly to college governance as a member of the Academic Council and serves as Co-Chair of the Service Learning committee, representing the Arts & Sciences Humanities division. Her involvement underscores her commitment to fostering student engagement and community-oriented learning initiatives.
Hammond's scholarly pursuits focus on art history, particularly African art history, informed by hands-on global experiences. She participated in the Fulbright-Hays OHIO Group Project Abroad, which included a month-long research trip to Ghana. During this immersion, she traveled over 1,400 miles across five regions, studying Ghanaian culture, language, politics, and society through the lens of the Transatlantic slave trade. Her activities encompassed attending academic lectures at universities and schools, touring castles, forts, and historical sites, and visiting museums, memorials, art markets, and craft villages. Leveraging her background as an arts educator, Hammond developed comprehensive curriculum resources on Ghanaian arts, including learning objectives, lesson plans, assignments, PowerPoint presentations, and lectures. These materials are set to be presented at a spring symposium and shared via a national database for educators. In her History of Art course, she integrates authentic kente cloth samples, photos, and videos from Kumasi facilities to provide students with tactile and visual learning opportunities. Hammond views this experience as profoundly transformative, emphasizing the hospitality encountered and the importance of cultural humility, empathy, and global awareness in education.
