About Kate

Dr. Kate Averis is Lecturer in European Languages in the School of Humanities at the University of Western Australia, a position she assumed in 2024. She currently serves as Director of Translation Studies and Convenor of Spanish Studies within the Discipline of European Languages and Cultures. Averis teaches courses in Spanish and French language, literature, culture, and translation. Her academic qualifications include a BA with First Class Honours in French and Hispanic Studies from King's College London, an MA with Distinction in French Literature and Culture from the same institution, and a PhD in French and Hispanic Studies from King's College London. Prior to joining UWA, she was Lecturer in European Studies at Universidad de Antioquia in Colombia from 2018 to 2023, Lecturer in French Studies at the University of London Institute in Paris from 2013 to 2017, Lectrice d’anglais at Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense from 2010 to 2013, and Graduate Lecturer in Spanish and French at King’s College London from 2008 to 2010.

Averis's research specializations encompass translingual and transcultural approaches to writing in and between Spanish, French, and English, with a particular emphasis on contemporary women’s writing and gender. Her interests also extend to European languages, literatures, and cultures; Latin American literatures and cultures; French and Francophone literatures and cultures; and translation theories and practices. She has earned the School of Humanities Mid-Career Research Award in 2025 and the School of Humanities Excellence in Teaching Award in 2024. Notable publications include the co-edited volume Contested Communities: Minor, Minority and Small Literatures in Europe (Legenda, 2023, with Margaret Littler and Godela Weiss-Sussex), the chapter ‘Still the Carer Sex?: Women Ageing and Caring in Contemporary Women’s Writing’ in Women’s Narratives of Ageing and Care (De Gruyter, 2025), and the article ‘Escritura translingüe en el Caribe colombiano: Los cristales de la sal de Cristina Bendek’ in Estudios Romanicos (2023). Averis holds editorial roles as co-editor for Latin American and Francophone Writing and Culture in the Literary Encyclopedia, and serves on the editorial boards of Essays in French Literature and Culture, the Series in Annie Ernaux International Studies (Brill-Rodopi), and the Series in French and Francophone Studies (University of Wales Press). Her ongoing projects investigate women’s ageing in twenty-first-century women’s writing and translingual women’s writing in the Americas. She is accepting PhD students in Spanish and Latin American studies, French and Francophone studies, translation studies, and literary and gender studies.
