About Karly

Dr Karly Bartrim is a Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences within the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. She is an Accredited Practising Dietitian deeply passionate about improving the lives of older people through quality food and nutrition care. Bartrim earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Queensland in 2024. Her doctoral thesis, titled "Are we ready for the future? An exploration of Australian dietitians' competence, preparedness, and experiences working in aged care," examines the skills, readiness, and challenges Australian dietitians face in residential aged care environments.

Bartrim's research specializations encompass aged care research, healthy ageing, and the dietetic workforce. She has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications that address critical issues in nutrition care for older adults. Key works include "Exploring Australian dietitians' experiences and preparedness for working in residential aged care facilities" (Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, 2024), "Dietitians' perceptions of employment models used in Australian residential aged care" (Australasian Journal on Ageing, 2024), "Menu Assessment Tools Used in Residential Aged Care: A Scoping Review of Content and Quality" (2024), "Food waste measurement in Australian hospitals and residential aged care facilities" (Frontiers in Nutrition, 2025), and "Examining dietitians' knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding malnutrition in residential aged care: a qualitative study" (Nutrition & Dietetics, 2023). Additional contributions cover allied health students' experiences and intentions to work with older adults. With works cited 128 times on Google Scholar, her scholarship influences discussions on dietitian employment models, menu assessments, food waste reduction, and workforce development in healthcare. At UQ, she coordinates and lectures in dietetics courses such as DIET7205 and DIET7106, preparing future professionals for practice.
