About Karine

Karine Dubé, DrPH, MPhil, is a distinguished scholar in Health Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her Doctor of Public Health in Health Policy and Management from UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health in 2016, a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies/International Health from Oxford University in 2005 with Distinction, and a B.A. in International Studies with a concentration in Global Health and a minor in Business Administration from UNC Chapel Hill in 2003 with Highest Honors. From 2017 to 2022, Dubé served as Assistant Professor in the Public Health Leadership Program at the Gillings School, acting as a socio-behavioral researcher focused on HIV cure-related research. She previously held positions at UNC as Research Program Manager for the Collaboratory of AIDS Researchers for Eradication within the Institute of Global Health and Infectious Diseases from 2013 to 2015, and as Consultant and Co-Investigator for the Social and Ethical Aspects of HIV Cure Research project from 2016 to 2017. She continues as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Health Policy and Management since 2022. Earlier career highlights include Senior Research Associate at FHI 360 from 2008 to 2012, Research and Program Analyst at amfAR from 2007 to 2008, and various clinical research roles.

Dubé's research interests center on the socio-behavioral and ethical dimensions of HIV cure research, including analytical treatment interruptions, community engagement, participant-centered outcomes, end-of-life studies, partner protections, and enhancing involvement of women, youth, and underrepresented groups. Key publications include "People with HIV at the End of Life and their Next-of-Kin/Loved Ones Are Willing to Participate in Interventional HIV Cure-Related Research" (AIDS, 2023), "Participant Experiences in HIV Cure-Directed Trial with an Extended Analytical Treatment Interruption in Philadelphia, United States" (HIV Research & Clinical Practice, 2023), "A Partner Protection Package (P3) for HIV Cure-Related Studies Involving Analytical Treatment Interruptions" (The Lancet Infectious Diseases, 2023), and "'With this study, we have hope that something is coming': Community Members’ Perceptions of HIV Cure-Related Research in Durban, South Africa" (HIV Research & Clinical Practice, 2023). She has received the Rhodes Scholarship (2003-2005), Morehead Scholarship (2000-2003), Arthur B. Holzworth Endowed Scholarship in Health Leadership (2015), and Rosalind Franklin Society Award in Science (2023). Dubé contributes to HIV cure collaboratories such as BEAT-HIV and amfAR Institute for HIV Cure Research, serves on the AIDS Clinical Trials Group Behavioral Science Subcommittee and International AIDS Society committees, co-founded the CUREiculum training program, and has given invited lectures including at UNC Chapel Hill's Parr Center for Ethics. Her scholarship shapes ethical standards and community involvement in global HIV research.
