Dr. Kanagarathinam D V is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History, School of Social Sciences, at Central University of Tamil Nadu, a position held since January 2023. Prior roles include Assistant Professor on contract in the same department from July 2017 to February 2019, post-doctoral research fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras from February 2019 to February 2022 focusing on the professionalization of Siddha medicine in colonial Tamil region, and Assistant Professor at Joy University from September 2022 to January 2023. He completed his Ph.D. from Pondicherry University in 2017 with a thesis titled "Physicians, Print Production and Medicine in Colonial South India (1867-1933)", an M.A. in History from the same institution in 2012 as university topper earning the Syndicate Bank Gold Medal, and a B.A. in History from Annamalai University in 2007. Dr. Kanagarathinam qualified for UGC Junior Research Fellowship and NET for Lectureship in December 2011, advancing to Senior Research Fellow in July 2014.
His research centers on the social history of medicine in colonial South India, encompassing indigenous systems like Siddha and Ayurveda, their revitalization, professionalization, print culture, and interactions with Western medicine. Notable publications include "Rise of Siddha Medicine: Causes and Constructions in the Madras Presidency (1920-1930s)" co-authored with John Bosco Lourdusamy in Medical History (Cambridge University Press, 2023); "Competing Narratives: History and Tamil Siddha Medicine in Colonial Times" in Asian Medicine (Brill, 2022); "Revitalisation of Ayurveda in Colonial Tamil Region and Contributions of Pandit Srinivasa Narayana Iyengar: A Historical Perspective" in Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (Elsevier, 2020); "Dr. Koman’s Report and Response of Native Physicians: A Discourse on Indigenous Systems of Medicine" in Indian Journal of History of Science (2019); and "Indigenous and Western Medicines in Colonial South India: Nature of Discourses and Impact" in the same journal (2018). He has contributed chapters such as "Reports of Tamil Physicians" in The Usman Report of 1923 (2022) and presented at international conferences in Switzerland, Sri Lanka, and Ireland. Dr. Kanagarathinam serves as a peer reviewer for Indian Journal of History of Science and has delivered lectures at national and international forums.
