About Justus

Justus Humphrey is an Assistant Teaching Professor of English Composition in the School of Humanities at Penn State Harrisburg, where he joined in the fall of 2012 and also serves as Assessment Coordinator for English Composition. Prior to this appointment, he taught for four years at Harrisburg Area Community College. His academic credentials include an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, an M.A. in English from the University of Maine, a B.A. in theatre from Northern Arizona University, and membership in the first class to earn the Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education from Temple University Harrisburg. Humphrey teaches writing courses such as ENGL 004, ENGL 15, and ENGL 202D, with a focus on developmental writing and composition.

Humphrey's academic interests span fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, developmental writing, and composition. His graduate work emphasized fiction, complemented by pursuits in creative nonfiction and poetry. Key publications include the short story "Burgers and Sushi" and poems "Dog Days," "After Leaves Fall," and "Baltimore IKEA," featured in The Wildwood Journal (Spring 2012); "Baltimore IKEA" in PANK (October 2011); personal essay "Wake Up" in Bayou Magazine (Fall 2009); poem "After Leaves Fall" in REAL: Regarding Arts and Letters (Fall 2009); short story "I Hear From Her For the First Time in a Year" in The Shine Journal Anthology Volume One (2010), originally published in The Shine Journal (October 2007); book review of Slow Burn by George Alexander in ANTIPODES: A North American Review of Australian Literature (Summer 2010); and book review of Back Burning by Sylvia Petter in the same journal (Summer 2008). He holds professional affiliations with the Association of Writers and Writing Programs and Educational Testing Services. Humphrey has contributed as Jury Co-Chair for the Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize and as a guest judge for Penn State Harrisburg literary awards. Born in southeast Alaska and raised there and in Arizona's mountains, he enriches his teaching with diverse experiences.
