Justin Kozubal, Ph.D., is an associate professor and program chair of sport business in Capital University's School of Management and Leadership. During his nine-year tenure at the institution, he earned tenure and promotion, and developed, launched, and chaired the university's sport business department. Under his leadership, students gained hands-on experience through internships with Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, National Hockey League organizations, and regional entities. He teaches courses in sport administration, sport communication, and public relations, aligning education with high-demand careers in the sport industry.
Kozubal earned his Ph.D. in Sport Management with a cognate in Sport Law and Governance from Troy University's Sorrell College of Business, an M.S. in Sport Administration from Ohio University, and a B.S. in Speech Communication from Ball State University. His professional career spans over 23 years in sport industry leadership, including roles with Major League Baseball's Arizona Fall League, Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Bulls, and Minor League Baseball. At The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, he managed a national sport sponsorship portfolio encompassing partnerships with MLB, MLS, MiLB, NCAA Final Four, College Football Playoff, Roush Fenway Racing, Rose Bowl, and Rose Parade. Kozubal's research focuses on fan safety, risk management, and legal issues in professional and intercollegiate sport. Notable publications include 'San Jose State University Volleyball Controversy: Legal Examination of Transgender Athlete Participation' in Sport Litigation Alert (2025, co-authored with M.S. Carroll), 'Sport Marketing' chapter in Governance in Sports: Analysis and Application (2021, Human Kinetics Publishers), and articles on sport litigation cases such as fan defamation lawsuits and civil rights complaints in Sport Litigation Alert (2018-2020). His presentations cover premises liability, sponsorship best practices, and organizational safety constraints at events like the Event Management Annual Conference (2024) and Sport Marketing Association Annual Conference (2023). His dissertation, 'Crying Foul: An Examination of Organizational Safety Constraints as a Barrier to Attendance,' highlights his expertise in fan safety research.
