About Julio

Julio C. Barredo, M.D., is the Toppel Family Endowed Professor in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He holds the positions of Director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Director of Children's Cancer Programs at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Associate Chair for Clinical and Translational Research in the Department of Pediatrics. With over 30 years of experience in pediatric oncology, Dr. Barredo earned his M.D. from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru, in 1982. He completed a rotating internship in Peru, pediatric residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center/Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York (1984-1987), and pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles/University of Southern California (1987-1990), along with research training under Dr. Richard G. Moran.

Prior to joining the University of Miami in 2006, Dr. Barredo advanced from Assistant Professor to tenured Professor in Pediatrics and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the Medical University of South Carolina (1991-2006). His research specializes in the adaptive survival mechanisms of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells under energy and metabolic stress, focusing on tumor metabolism, metabolic vulnerabilities in relapsed/refractory childhood and adolescent/young adult ALL, and the non-canonical epigenetic role of AMPK in regulating gene expression for cancer cell survival. The Barredo Laboratory seeks novel therapeutic targets for refractory leukemia and hematological malignancies. Dr. Barredo has received the McCallister Research Fellowship (1989), Mitchell I. Rubin Junior (1995) and Senior (2004) Research Awards, Jolley Foundation Research Award (1998), Mycah Batchelor Award (2007), Cancer Researcher of the Year from UM Sylvester Women’s Cancer Association (2008), and multiple listings in America’s Top Doctors for Cancer, Castle Connolly Top Doctors, and U.S. News & World Report Top 1% in Pediatric Oncology. He has contributed to improving leukemia outcomes in Peru and established alex’s place, a dedicated pediatric oncology clinic at Sylvester. His work has garnered over 1,960 citations across 34 publications.
