Juliette Overland is Professor in the School of Law at Western Sydney University and Associate Dean (Education & Students) in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts, Business, Education and Law. She earned a First Class Honours degree in Law and a Doctor of Philosophy from the College of Law at the Australian National University, where her thesis examined the regulation of corporate liability for insider trading. Before entering academia, she practiced as a corporate lawyer at leading Australian law firms. Professor Overland previously held senior academic positions at the University of Sydney and Macquarie University, joining Western Sydney University in 2024. She is available to supervise PhD students on topics aligned with her research interests.
Professor Overland is recognised as Australia’s leading authority on the regulation of insider trading, with expertise spanning corporate crime, corporate governance, and corporate law. Her seminal book, Corporate Liability for Insider Trading, was published by Routledge. Notable recent publications include Australian Corporate Law Reform and the Regulation of Insider Trading (Company and Securities Law Journal, 2025), Insider trading laws and regulation in Australia (chapter in Research Handbook on Insider Trading, 2025), Out of sight, out of mind: a critique of the federal government’s response to corporate law reform inquiries (Melbourne University Law Review, 2025, co-authored with Clinton Free and Charlie Guerit), The regulatory tide begins to rise against greenwashing - ASIC v Vanguard Investments (Company and Securities Law Journal, 2024, co-authored with Carmela Di Lernia), and Examining 'Questionable' Trading by Insiders: Corporate Governance Disclosures and Securities Trading Policies (Australian Journal of Corporate Law, 2023). She serves as the Company Law section editor for the Company and Securities Law Journal and has acted as an expert consultant in insider trading cases. Additionally, she provides regular advice on insider trading issues and contributes to law reform processes. Throughout her career, Professor Overland has received numerous teaching awards, including the joint Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Educational Engagement and Innovation (University of Sydney, 2021) and the $10,000 Wayne Lonergan Outstanding Teaching Award (University of Sydney, 2017).
