Julie Milligan serves as Senior Professional Practice Fellow and Primary Liaison at the University of Otago College of Education, based at the Invercargill campus within the Humanities Division. In this role, she contributes to the delivery of primary teacher education programs, acting as a key contact for primary education initiatives in the region. Her work supports the Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg) three-year degree, limited to primary education students, emphasizing practical and professional development for aspiring primary teachers.
Julie Milligan coordinates and teaches several core papers in the primary education curriculum. In EDPR131 Te Weu, she introduces students to the ethical, legal, and practical requirements of the primary teaching profession, alongside an examination of self-identities and policies related to te reo me ngā tikanga Māori. The paper includes topics such as teacher professionalism, key education policies, effective communication and classroom management, personal culture and reflective practice, concepts within te ao Māori, te reo Māori in classrooms, learning languages, disability matters, and e-learning tools. For EDCR231 English and Mathematics 2, co-taught with Alli McKenzie, she explores approaches to teaching English and mathematics and statistics in alignment with The New Zealand Curriculum, focusing on pedagogies, theories, research, learning progressions, assessment, and integration of te reo Māori and te ao Māori.
