Dr. Julian Basanovic is an Adjunct Research Fellow in the School of Psychological Science at the University of Western Australia. He completed his PhD in Psychology at the University of Western Australia in 2016, as a member of the Elizabeth Rutherford Memorial Centre for the Advancement of Research on Emotion (CARE), where his research examined relationships between biased selective attention and attentional control in individuals with elevated anxiety vulnerability. Post-PhD, Basanovic coordinated cognitive intervention trials at the Western Australia Centre for Health and Ageing, targeting depression symptoms in people with dementia. In 2018, he returned to CARE as a Research Fellow, focusing on the role of information processing in emotion and behavior. During this period, he lectured undergraduate courses such as PSYC1102 Psychology: Behaviour in Context and PSYC3310 Specialist Research Topics, and supervised Honours and PhD students. In 2022, he began as a Lecturer at the University of Exeter while retaining his adjunct role at UWA.
Basanovic's research investigates patterns of cognitive information processing, such as biases in emotional information processing, and their contribution to emotional vulnerabilities including anxiety, fear, phobia, depression, and behaviors related to consumption and healthy ageing. His work includes developing novel methods for assessing and modifying these biases. Notable publications include "Attentional Bias and Viewing Preference in Specific Fear: Insights from the Dual-Probe Video Paradigm" (2025, Cognitive Therapy and Research), "Attentional biases to signals of negative information: Reliable measurement across three anxiety domains" (2024, Behavior Research Methods), "The attenuation of spider avoidance action tendencies in spider-fearful individuals and its impact on behavioural and emotional responding to spiders" (2025, Motivation and Emotion), and "Psychological intervention in individuals with subthreshold depression: individual participant data meta-analysis" (2025, British Journal of Psychiatry). He has contributed to projects such as the Intervention Research Grant for "Resilient Emotions, Thoughts, Actions: an online toolkit for young people" (2021-2026). Basanovic received the CARE Mentorship Award and the UWA School of Psychological Science Student Mentorship Award in 2019. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Cognitive Therapy since 2018.
