About Julia

Julia Wolf is Professor of Pure Mathematics in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, Faculty of Mathematics, at the University of Cambridge, a position she has held since 2022. She is also Fellow under Title C and Senior College Lecturer at Trinity College Cambridge since 2025. Wolf earned her BA (Hons) in Mathematics (First Class) from Clare College, Cambridge, in 2002, followed by the Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics with Distinction (Part III of the Mathematical Tripos) in 2003, a PhD from the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Cambridge in 2008 under supervisor W. T. Gowers, and Habilitation à diriger des recherches from Université Paris-Sud (Orsay) in 2012. Her career includes Triennial Assistant Professor at Rutgers University (2008-2010), postdoctoral fellow at Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley (2008), and member of the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (2007-2008); Hadamard Associate Professor and later Associate Professor (with tenure) at École Polytechnique, Paris (2010-2015); Heilbronn Reader in combinatorics and number theory at the University of Bristol (2013-2018); and Associate Professor (previously University Lecturer) at Cambridge (2018-2022).

Her research focuses on arithmetic combinatorics, harmonic analysis, and analytic number theory, addressing topics such as stability in finite structures, VC-dimension of subsets in finite fields, and generalizations of classical theorems like Szemerédi's. Notable publications include 'Stability, corners, and other two-dimensional shapes' (Canadian Journal of Mathematics, 2025, with A. Martin-Pizarro and D. Palacín), 'Quantitative structure of stable sets in finite abelian groups' (Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, 2020, with C. Terry), 'Szemerédi's Theorem in the Primes' (Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, 2018, with L. Rimanić), and 'A model-theoretic note on the Freiman-Ruzsa theorem' (Selecta Mathematica, 2019, with A. Martin-Pizarro and D. Palacín). Wolf has received the Pilkington Prize (2024), Atiyah Fellowship from the London Mathematical Society (2023), Forder Lectureship (2020), Anne Bennett Prize (2016), and Gates Cambridge Scholarship (2003-2007), and holds an EPSRC Open Fellowship (2025-2028). She serves as Managing Editor of the Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society (2024-present), editor for Journal de Théorie des Nombres de Bordeaux and others, Chair of the Faculty Board of Computer Science and Technology at Cambridge (2024-present), and Chair of the British Combinatorial Committee (2022-present). Her public outreach includes the Forder Lectures in New Zealand (2020), Oxford Mathematics Public Lecture (2019), and LMS Popular Lectures (2016).
