Judy Bauer is the Head of the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food and serves as Professor and Discipline Lead of Nutrition & Dietetics within the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University. Her academic background includes a PhD in Nutrition & Dietetics from Queensland University of Technology (2000–2003), with a thesis titled "New insights into medical nutrition therapy for cancer cachexia"; a Master of Health Science in Nutrition Screening in a Private Hospital from Queensland Institute of Biology & Technology Pty Ltd (1993–1995); a Graduate Diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics (1980–1981); and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Queensland (1977–1979). As a Fellow of Dietitians Australia and an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, she has amassed over 40 years of experience across clinical practice, research, and academia. Bauer joined Monash University in February 2022.
Professor Bauer's research portfolio centers on translational research in nutrition and dietetics, encompassing nutrition assessment and intervention for disease-related malnutrition, sarcopenia, and oncology. Her key areas include body composition, energy expenditure measured by doubly labelled water and indirect calorimetry, appetite and satiety, gastrointestinal appetite hormones, and clinical trials. She is internationally renowned for her work in nutrition screening, innovative nutrition intervention programs, and the development of evidence-based practice guidelines, particularly in oncology and malnutrition. With a Scopus h-index of 41, over 180 peer-reviewed publications, and more than 7,500 citations, her influence is substantial. She has supervised more than 15 PhD scholars, many of whom are now leading researchers. Key publications feature "Development of a valid and reliable malnutrition screening tool for adult acute hospital patients" (1999, cited over 1,300 times), "Effects of weight-neutral approaches compared with traditional weight loss approaches on weight, health, and well-being" (2020, cited 120 times), and recent contributions such as "Energy expenditure in head and neck cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis" (2026). Bauer serves as a board member of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia and a member of the Australian Dietetics Council. In 2023, she received the Life Membership Award from Dietitians Australia.
