Professor Judith Jones serves as Professor of Oral Surgery and BDS Programme Director in the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences at King’s College London, holding an Honorary Consultant position in Oral Surgery. She graduated with a BDS from the London Hospital Medical College Dental Institute in 1987. Subsequently, she completed an MSc in Experimental Oral Pathology, investigating integrins in oral epithelium, and was awarded an MRC Training Fellowship in 1992 for her PhD research on the role of integrins in malignant oral epithelium. In 1998, Jones joined UMDS as Lecturer and Honorary Specialist Registrar in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. She undertook ACCOMS training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College Hospital, obtaining her CCST in Academic Oral Surgery in 2003. Appointed Honorary Consultant in Oral Surgery at GSTT and KCH in 2005, she transitioned to Queen Mary University of London in 2008 as Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant, progressing to Reader in 2013 and Professor in 2021. She returned to King’s College London in 2022.
Throughout her career, Professor Jones has made significant contributions to research in oral health, building on her foundational work in oral pathology. Notable publications include co-authorship of educational books such as OSCEs for Dentistry with Kathleen F.M. Fan and MCQs for Dentistry with Barry F.A. Quinn and Kathleen F.M. Fan, as well as peer-reviewed papers like 'Distal cervical caries in the mandibular second molar: implications for the future of third molar management' (2014) and 'Diseases associated with mandibular third molar teeth' (2018). Her influence is particularly profound in dental education and assessment, where she has led the Centre for Teaching and Innovation at QMUL’s Institute of Dentistry, developed OSCE components for the Overseas Registration Exam (ORE) and Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS) of the Royal College of Surgeons, served as Training Programme Director, and chaired the Oral Surgery Specialty Training Committee for London and South East. Jones was an elected Board member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, RCS England, for two terms until 2021. She currently holds elected membership on the Council of the British Association of Oral Surgeons, serves on the Oral Surgery Specialty Advisory Committee, and chairs the LDS examination.
