Judith Dann is a professor of world history and the classics at Columbus State Community College in the Humanities Department, where she teaches courses in Classics, Mythology, European History, Latin, and world history focusing on ancient Greece and Rome from 2500 B.C. to the 15th century A.D. She earned her B.A. in Classics from Miami University (Oxford) in 1988, M.A. in Classics (ancient Greek and Latin) from The Ohio State University in 1991, and Ph.D. in Ancient History from The Ohio State University in 1999. During her doctoral studies, Dann participated in archaeological excavations at the Isthmia site in Greece for three summers from 1990 to 1992, where the team uncovered a Greek pool dating to 500 B.C. dedicated to Poseidon, one of the ancient Olympic Games locations. Before her full-time role at Columbus State, she served as a teaching assistant at Ohio State University and as an adjunct instructor at Columbus State Community College, Capital University, Franklin University, and Ohio Dominican University. A third-generation educator, Dann provides Zoom options for all her classes to enhance student accessibility and retention.
Judith Dann is a nationally recognized expert on Victoria Woodhull, the first woman nominated for U.S. President by a political party in 1872 as the Equal Rights Party candidate. Her research uncovered Woodhull's achievements as the first female stockbroker on Wall Street in 1870 alongside her sister, and Dann has documented Woodhull's life through board service at the Robbins Hunter Museum in Granville, Ohio, which features a dedicated Woodhull exhibit including a replica of her Wall Street dress and a commemorative clock. Dann created the Woodhull Rising website as a hub for experts and has organized roundtable discussions exploring contemporary issues through Woodhull's advocacy. Her expertise has been quoted in publications such as 'Out of the Shadows' and 'Victoria Woodhull: Shattering Glass Ceilings,' with Columbus State Community College acknowledged in the bibliography of the latter, and in a 2016 USA Today article. Dann delivers public lectures on Woodhull, uses her story to inspire students on determination and success, and is developing new courses including 'Latin for the Professional,' a Classics major, and 'Women in the Ancient Mediterranean.' She emphasizes studying history to foster good citizenship and humanity.
