A true gem in the academic community.
Professor Joyce Koh is a Professor in the Higher Education Development Centre at the University of Otago, promoted to this position effective 1 February 2024. She earned a BBA (Honours) from the National University of Singapore, along with an MS and PhD from Indiana University. Drawing on her professional background in instructional design and teacher education, she works closely with faculty to develop innovative instructional solutions for both online and classroom environments. Her research centres on advancing faculty professional development, particularly through design thinking approaches that enable educators to integrate emerging technologies and address evolving student needs via pedagogical innovation.
As Principal Investigator on multiple research grants, Professor Koh has created influential tools such as Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) surveys and design rubrics for crafting student-centred lessons, a flipped learning design framework, and instruments to measure online teaching and learning dexterity. Her TPACK resources are employed internationally for assessing technology integration in teaching. She has co-authored a highly cited Springer book on Design Thinking for Education and produced impactful publications including 'Shifting online during COVID-19: A systematic review of teaching and learning science reports' (2022, cited over 180 times), 'A systematic review of the opportunities and challenges of micro-credentials' (2023, cited over 300 times), 'Online teaching dexterity—implications for post-pandemic university teaching and learning' (2024), and 'Four pedagogical dimensions for understanding flipped learning in higher education' (2019). Professor Koh supervises doctoral students, fosters international collaborations, and contributes to addressing key higher education issues like hybrid learning and micro-credentials.
