About Joshua

Joshua Jackson is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Communication and Journalism in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He earned a B.A. from Belhaven University, where he attended on a football scholarship and discovered his interest in journalism through an introductory course that led him to spend extensive time in the TV studio, eventually earning a key to it by his senior year. He also holds an M.S. from Jackson State University. With 12 years of experience in broadcast journalism, Jackson has served as a news anchor, producer, and multimedia journalist in several states across the country. He arrived in Kansas City as an evening news anchor and previously worked with the Hearst Corporation as a sports director and multimedia journalist, during which he won an Emmy Award in 2013 and several other broadcasting awards.

Jackson joined the UMKC faculty in 2023, selected for the position due to its flexibility allowing remote work in summers and holidays off to support his family. He has significantly impacted the program by spearheading the creation of KMKC News, the university's new broadcast station. His classes provide students with practical opportunities, including covering Kansas City Fashion Week, shadowing at KMBC 9, and working Kansas City Chiefs games. Jackson maintains his professional involvement in broadcast journalism as a news anchor, producer, and multimedia journalist. His commitment to community service, including coaching basketball with In His Steps—a Christian nonprofit for marginalized youth in Mississippi during college—earned him Belhaven University’s Young Alumnus of the Year award in 2018 for his broadcasting accomplishments and service work. Through his industry expertise and dedication, Jackson bridges professional practice and academic training at UMKC.
