Josh Hammonds, Ph.D., serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor of Communication in the Department of Communication Studies at Rollins College. He also holds an appointment as Assistant Professor of Communications at the Crummer Graduate School of Business. Hammonds earned his B.A. from the University of Southern Indiana, M.A. from Ball State University, and Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska. His research specializations encompass interpersonal communication, privacy management and deception, and small group dynamics, which guide his scholarly and pedagogical contributions.
In his role at Rollins College, Hammonds teaches key courses including Interpersonal Communication (COM 220), utilizing texts such as K. Floyd's Interpersonal Communication: The Whole Story, and Communication and the Body (COM 315G), incorporating readings on the biology of human communication. He extends his expertise to executive education through the Crummer Mini MBA program, where he delivers modules on organizational strategy and communication essentials. Hammonds co-authored the book How to Actually Do Research, published in 2018 with Rollins colleagues Ted Gournelos and Maridath Wilson, offering practical tactics for research in the humanities. His service includes participation in the Faculty Affairs Committee, as noted in 2017 meeting minutes addressing contingent faculty and grant standards, and membership on a 2021 Doctor of Business Administration dissertation committee examining board member resilience in not-for-profit organizations. Hammonds has been highlighted in college news for innovative remote teaching that engaged students via Instagram, and he provided commentary as department chair on managing digital footprints in a 2025 WESH article.
