Dr. Joshua Anderson is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, within the College of Liberal Arts and Education. He joined the university in 2016, initially in the Department of Humanities as an Assistant Professor of English, before transitioning to the School of Education. Anderson teaches courses such as Literature for Young Adults, Grammar in Context, Teaching Composition, and Teaching English in Middle and Secondary Schools. He also serves as a University Supervisor for pre-service teachers, acting as a liaison between student teachers and cooperating teachers, supporting local communities, and using feedback to refine his methods courses. His teaching draws on high school approaches for authentic student engagement and treats the classroom as a laboratory for pedagogical development. He invites local educators from Southwest Wisconsin to provide students with insights into current practices.
Anderson holds a PhD in English with an emphasis in English Education from Western Michigan University, a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Pedagogy and Writing from Northern Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary English Education from Northern Michigan University in 2005. Prior to UW-Platteville, he taught for twelve years in rural educational settings at middle school, high school, and post-secondary levels, including English at Iowa-Grant High School and Middle School, where he coached football and forensics. His research interests include the impact of culturally relevant pedagogy on rural school districts and preparing students to become critical consumers of information in the digital age. He is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English, the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents, and the National Rural Education Association. Anderson values the achievements of his former students in securing education positions and impacting communities.
