Dr. Josephine L. Hardwick, known professionally as Josie Hardwick, serves as Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery within the School of Veterinary Medicine at Murdoch University. She earned her BVetMed from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, in 2008. After graduation, she spent six years at a Thoroughbred racetrack and equine referral hospital in Sydney, completing a rotating equine internship followed by an equine surgical residency programme. She then practiced in private equine practice in Western Australia before joining Murdoch University. Hardwick is a Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery and has been a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Large Animal Surgery since 2016. With over 17 years of experience in the equine industry, she practices as an equine surgeon at The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University.
Her research focuses on the equine upper respiratory tract, and she is currently pursuing a PhD in this field. Hardwick's work has influenced clinical practices, notably through AgriFutures Australia-funded projects from 2022 to 2024 that advanced evaluation methods for upper respiratory tract endoscopy in Thoroughbred yearlings. Key publications include 'Yearling laryngeal function in Thoroughbreds that underwent a laryngoplasty differs from controls' (Equine Veterinary Journal, 2024), 'A first step towards objective grading of equine laryngeal function' (The Veterinary Journal, 2024), 'Yearling laryngeal function grades II.2 and below are not associated with reduced performance' (Equine Veterinary Journal, 2025), and 'Stakeholder perceptions of thoroughbred yearling sales endoscopy' (Australian Veterinary Journal, 2024). She has delivered lectures and webinars, such as at the Australian Veterinary Association Conference and on yearling airway evaluation for the Equine Veterinarians Australia.
