Joseph D. Khoury, MD, is the Stokes-Shackleford Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. An internationally recognized leader in hematopathology, he excels in clinical diagnostics, teaching, and translational research focused on lymphoma, leukemia, cancer biomarkers, applied computational biology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and cancer classification and reporting. Prior to joining UNMC in June 2022, Dr. Khoury served as a professor in the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. His academic background includes a BS in Biology (cum laude) from the American University of Beirut in 1993 and an MD from the same institution in 1997. He completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland from 1997 to 2001, followed by a clinical fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2001 to 2003. Dr. Khoury is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology (2002), Hematology (2005), and Medical Quality (2014).
Dr. Khoury has authored more than 330 peer-reviewed publications, textbooks, and book chapters. Key contributions include significant involvement in the fifth edition of the World Health Organization classification of hematolymphoid neoplasms and recent works such as 'Functional genomics and tumor microenvironment analysis reveal prognostic biological subtypes in Mantle cell lymphoma' (Nature Communications, 2025), 'Advancing the classification of hematolymphoid neoplasms together: for patients, medicine, and science' (Blood, 2026), and multiple updates to WHO tumor classifications in 2026. He chairs the standing editorial board of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours, establishing global standards for cancer diagnosis and research, and previously chaired the College of American Pathologists' cancer committee, which develops protocols for cancer reporting. Dr. Khoury has received the UNMC Distinguished Scientist Award (2023), MD Anderson Cancer Center Faculty Excellence Award (2022), and Best Teacher Award (2022), among others for teaching, mentorship, research, and clinical excellence. He has lectured extensively worldwide and organized international and regional medical education conferences.
