About Jose

Associate Professor Jose Rodriguez is a researcher and educator in the School of Engineering at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He holds a PhD and a Master of Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as an Ingeniero Civil degree from the University of Rosario in Argentina. Rodriguez commenced his academic career at the University of Newcastle in February 2003 as a Lecturer in Engineering and Built Environment. He progressed to Senior Lecturer in January 2009 and to Associate Professor in the School of Engineering, focusing on Environmental Engineering, in 2014. Additional appointments include Visiting Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2003 to 2009 and in 2006, and Visiting Associate Professor at Universidad Nacional de Rosario in 2010.

Rodriguez's research centers on fluvial hydraulics, eco-hydraulics, eco-geomorphology, and river and wetland restoration and adaptation to climate change and anthropogenic pressures. His work involves applying engineering techniques to solve environmental problems in aquatic environments through analytical, experimental, and numerical approaches, encompassing habitat hydraulics, physical-biological coupling, sediment transport, channel evolution, vegetation effects, and unsteady open-channel flows. Prominent publications include 'Impacts of climate change and land use on riverine sediment inputs into coastal ecosystems' (Jorquera et al., 2020), 'Predicting flow and vegetation status in floodplain wetlands during drought' (Sandi et al., 2020), 'Modeling Ecogeomorphic Systems' (Saco and Rodríguez, 2013), and 'Estuarine Wetland Ecohydraulics and Migratory Shorebird Habitat Restoration' (Rodríguez and Howe, 2013). He has supervised 15 completed PhD theses and currently oversees two PhD projects on topics such as coastal wetland evolution under sea-level rise and optimal urban water supply planning. Since 2014, he has served as Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering. Rodriguez has received the Stout Water Resources Research Award in 2000 and research fellowships from the National Council of Scientific and Technological Research in 1993. His efforts have secured 34 research grants totaling $3,565,719, including Australian Research Council Discovery Projects.
