Jordan Hampton is a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Physiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine and affiliated with the Harry Butler Institute at Murdoch University. He earned his Bachelor of Science with Honours in 2003, Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery with Honours in 2005, and Doctor of Philosophy in 2017, all from Murdoch University. His PhD thesis, titled 'Animal welfare for wild herbivore management,' addressed welfare considerations in wildlife control. Hampton has been at Murdoch University for over eight years, with prior roles including Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne and Adjunct Lecturer at Murdoch University. He is also an Honorary Fellow in the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne.
Hampton's research specializations include physiology, animal welfare, ecotoxicology, bioethics, wildlife management, epidemiology, and wildlife contraception, with emphasis on ethical wildlife interventions, social licence, and conservation impacts. His work has garnered over 3,400 citations on Google Scholar. Key publications encompass the 'Handbook of Wildlife Chemical Immobilization' (2023), 'Social License and Animal Welfare: Developments from the Past Decade in Australia' (Animals, 2020), 'Compassionate versus Consequentialist Conservation' (Conservation Biology, 2019), 'Animal Welfare, Social License, and Wildlife Use Industries' (Journal of Wildlife Management, 2019), 'Why Humans Kill Animals and Why We Cannot Avoid It' (2023), and 'Preserving Predation' (BioScience, 2025). He contributed to the book 'Wildlife Ethics: The Ethics of Wildlife Management and Conservation' (2021). Hampton received the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare Early Career Animal Welfare Researcher of the Year Award in 2023 (joint recipient). He serves as Handling Editor for Wildlife Research and has delivered plenary lectures on animal ethics and wildlife management at international conferences.
