About Jonathan

Dr. Jonathan Staggs serves as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business at the University of Queensland Business School, within the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science/International Relations from The University of Queensland, an MBA, a Doctor of Philosophy in Business from the same institution, and a Graduate Certificate in Theology from Brisbane School of Theology. His 2013 PhD thesis, titled 'Institutional entrepreneurship and the development of a new organisational field of science research infrastructure: the case of the "Smart State Institutes"', examined institutional dynamics in science research infrastructure. Prior to his academic career, Staggs held senior positions at Gaba Corporation, a Japanese education company, managing corporate training, recruitment, and quality management, which provided him with practical experience in business leadership across diverse workplaces.

Staggs is recognized as an entrepreneurship and innovation scholar, with publications in leading journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Studies, and the Cambridge Journal of Economics. Key publications include 'Institutional change, entrepreneuring and place: building a smart state' (Organization Studies, 2021, with April Wright and Lee Jarvis), 'Maintaining places of social inclusion: ebola and the emergency department' (Administrative Science Quarterly, 2020, with April L. Wright et al.), 'Government policy, university strategy and the academic entrepreneur: The case of Queensland's Smart State Institutes' (Cambridge Journal of Economics, 2012, with Mark Dodgson), 'Institutional logics, risk and extreme events: insights from and for management education' (British Journal of Management, 2024, with April L. Wright et al.), and 'An instructional innovation that embeds group learning in case teaching: the table case method' (Journal of Management Education, 2024, with April L. Wright et al.). His research focuses on entrepreneurship within institutional settings, the role of place in innovation processes, and the actors and institutions that support entrepreneurial ecosystems in areas including the energy and health sectors, craft and family business, Indigenous perspectives, artisan and craft industries, and the Australian wine industry. In his teaching practice, he emphasizes case study research that highlights stakeholder engagement in strategy and has experience leading postgraduate business programs with strong ethical foundations.
