Jonathan Schwartz, Ph.D., is a Professor of Education at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD), where he joined in 2019 as Dean of the College of Public Service, a role he held until 2024. In this capacity, he provided visionary leadership for departments including criminal justice, political science, nonprofit management, social work, and urban education, fostering research collaborations and community partnerships. Currently, he serves as Associate Vice President of Advancement at UHD, contributing to university relations and strategic initiatives. Prior to UHD, Schwartz was Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in the College of Education at the University of Houston, where he also served as a faculty member in the Department of Psychological, Health, and Learning Sciences from 2014 to 2019, and earlier from 2005 to 2009. His earlier career included positions as department chair of Counseling and Educational Psychology and associate dean in the College of Education at New Mexico State University.
Schwartz earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology and Master of Arts in counseling from New Mexico State University in 2001 and earlier, respectively, along with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is a nationally renowned scholar whose research focuses on men and masculinity, prevention strategies, and intimate partner violence. He has authored three books addressing prevention of bullying, violence, and foundational aspects of the field. Schwartz played a key role in developing the American Psychological Association's (APA) first-ever guidelines on prevention, approved in 2013. His impactful work has garnered prestigious honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in Prevention from the Prevention Section of APA's Society of Counseling Psychology in 2017 and the Social Justice Award in Counseling Psychology from APA Division 17. A Fellow of the APA, he has served as President of an APA Division and co-founded the Advancing Community Engagement and Service (ACES) Institute at the University of Houston. At UHD, he has moderated the President's Lecture Series on strategic partnerships and presented on external funding opportunities for research during the ORCA Symposium.
