Professor Jonathan Morris is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Northern Clinical School and Discipline of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology. He graduated with MB ChB from the University of Edinburgh, completed his PhD at the University of Oxford, and holds FRANZCOG, CMFM, and DDU qualifications. Returning to Sydney in 1998 after his doctoral studies, he undertook subspecialty training in Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine. Morris has held senior leadership roles, including Director of the Kolling Institute for Medical Research from 2012 to 2017, Head of Sydney Medical School – Northern, and Head of Women’s and Babies Research at the Kolling Institute.
He leads a large perinatal research group comprising over 30 researchers across basic science, clinical trials, and population health, with a focus on high-risk pregnancies, preterm birth prevention, stillbirth reduction, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, and neonatal outcomes. Author of 279 publications cited over 10,700 times, his key works include the landmark international cluster randomised trial 'Immediate delivery compared with expectant management after preterm pre-labour rupture of membranes close to term (PPROMT)' published in The Lancet (2016), involving over 1,800 women from 11 countries, and 'Effect of Delayed vs Immediate Cord Clamping on Iron Status and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes at 4 Years of Age in Preterm Infants' in the New England Journal of Medicine (2017). He has maintained continuous NHMRC funding as Chief Investigator for over 10 years. As Chair of the Stillbirth Foundation Australia since 2010 and Co-lead of the Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Care After Stillbirth and Research Capacity Development), Morris advances advocacy, education, and clinical improvements like the Safer Baby Bundle. His contributions earned him Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS). He is President Elect of the Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand.
