About John

John Mikler is an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Government and International Relations at the School of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sydney. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours (BCom Hons) from the University of New South Wales, a Master of International Studies with Merit (MIntS Merit) from the University of Sydney, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney completed in 2007. He joined the University of Sydney as a Senior Lecturer in 2009 in the Department of Government and International Relations and has since been promoted to Associate Professor.

Mikler's research specializations encompass international political economy, comparative political economy, the role of transnational economic actors such as multinational corporations in global policy and governance, varieties of capitalism, public policy, and regulation. Key publications include the book The Political Power of Global Corporations (Polity Press, 2018); the edited volume The Handbook of Global Companies (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013); Greening the Car Industry: Varieties of Capitalism and Climate Change (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2009); Climate Innovation: Liberal Capitalism and Climate Change (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013, co-edited with Neil E. Harrison); 'The Big Four and corporate tax governance: From global dis-organization to national capture?' (Global Policy, 2022, with Ainsley Elbra); 'Perceptions of the global financial crisis in the US, UK, Canada and Australia: a comparative editorial analysis of the legitimacy of finance' (Business and Politics, 2017, with Sundran Rajendra and Ainsley Elbra); and 'Sharing sovereignty for policy outcomes' (Policy and Society, 2011, with Betsi Beem). He received the Giandomenico Majone Prize in August 2008. Mikler contributes to learning and teaching in government and international relations units and supervises research projects and activities in international political economy and related areas.
