Conjoint Professor John Marley is affiliated with the School of Medicine and Public Health in the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle. He holds qualifications including MD, MBChB, FRCP(Edin), FRACGP, FACRRM, DA, DRCOG, FPCert, and MAICD. From 2001 to 2006, he served as Pro Vice-Chancellor Health at the University of Newcastle, where he established and headed the Faculty of Health, encompassing four schools—Medicine, Nursing & Midwifery, Biomedical Sciences & Pharmacy, and Health Sciences—4000 students across various programs, and initiated Pharmacy and Oral Health programs. Previously, he was Foundation Professor of General Practice and Dean of Students in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Adelaide. He also holds a Chair in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Queensland and a conjoint Chair at the University of Adelaide. His clinical experience spans cardiology, emergency medicine, and metropolitan, rural, and remote general practice, and he remains an active clinician in general practice and emergency medicine.
Professor Marley's research spans laboratory bench to large clinical trials, with publications in prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, British Medical Journal, and Medical Journal of Australia. Notable contributions include the International Hormone Replacement Treatment Outcome Study and the Second Australian National Blood Pressure Study. A lifelong interest in medication use and prescribing has seen him contribute to Australian Prescriber (as a member of the Executive Editorial Committee), Therapeutic Guidelines, the Drug and Therapeutics Information Service, the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee, the Drug Utilisation Sub-Committee of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, and the development of the Australian Medicines Handbook. He has held positions such as Head of Drug Safety and Clinical Research in the pharmaceutical industry and provided policy advice to Commonwealth and State Governments. He chairs the Board of the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute, serves on the NSW Health Strategic Advisory Committee, and contributed to the development of the Uni-Clinic model adopted in the Commonwealth Government’s Super Clinic Program. An expert in medical and health professional education across all levels, he has served as Chair of the Academic Council of the International Medical University in Kuala Lumpur. In 2017, Emeritus Professor John Marley was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to medical education.
