John F. Kros serves as the McMahon Distinguished Professor of Marketing and Supply Chain Management in the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management within the College of Business at East Carolina University, a position he has held since May 2002. Specializing in Business & Economics, particularly marketing and supply chain management, he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including Business Decision Modeling, Statistics, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Purchasing and Materials Management, and Logistics and Materials Management, both online and face-to-face. Prior to his current role, Kros was an Associate Professor of Quantitative Methods at Hawaii Pacific University from 1997 to 2002, where he handled teaching, curriculum development, and served as Academic Coordinator. He also served as Visiting Professor at Virginia Tech from 1999 to 2003, teaching quantitative methods and operations management, and held graduate research and teaching assistant positions at the University of Virginia and Santa Clara University. His industry experience includes roles as Department Specialist in Operations at Hughes Network Systems from 1994 to 1996 and as sole proprietor of JFK Consulting since 1997, providing services in systems analysis, training, and strategic planning. Kros holds a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia (1997), with a dissertation on Taguchi Methods in Multiresponse Engineering Design; an MBA from Santa Clara University (1992), with concentrations in Operations Management and Mathematical Modeling; and a BBA from the University of Texas at Austin (1990), majoring in Engineering Route to Business with an Operations Management concentration.
Kros's research focuses on simulation and process analysis, quality control, applied statistical analysis, supply chain management, operations management, quality practices in supply chains, industrial vending systems, traceability, and buyer-supplier relationships in healthcare. He authored Spreadsheet Modeling for Business Decisions (5th ed., Kendall Hunt, 2016) and co-authored Health Care Operations and Supply Chain Management (Jossey-Bass, 2013), Statistics for Health Care Professionals (3rd ed., Jossey-Bass, 2015), and Supply Chain and Operations Management (Cognella). His peer-reviewed publications appear in journals such as International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management, Technological Forecasting & Social Change, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, and INTERFACES, with notable works including "Data mining and the impact of missing data" (2003), "Impact of just-in-time inventory systems on OEM suppliers" (2006), "ISO 9001 and supply chain quality in the United States" (2018), and "The impact of buyer-supplier relationship quality and information management on industrial vending machine benefits in the healthcare industry" (2019). Awards include the University Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award (2013-2014), East Carolina University Scholar Teacher Awards (2004-2005, 2009-2010), East Carolina University Commerce Club Teaching Excellence Awards (2006, 2011), and finalist for the Max Ray Joyner Award for Outstanding Teaching in Distance Education (2010, 2012). A member of the Council for Supply Chain Management Professionals, Institute for Supply Management, INFORMS, Production and Operations Management Society, and Decision Sciences Institute, he holds leadership roles such as Secretary of the Raleigh Roundtable CSCMP and Board Member of the Eastern North Carolina ISM Chapter, and facilitates student participation in industry conferences and tours.
