About John

Professor John Grigg is Professor of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology and Head of the Discipline of Ophthalmology at the University of Sydney's Save Sight Institute within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He earned his MBBS from the University of Queensland and MD from the University of Sydney, and holds fellowships FRANZCO and FRACS. Following completion of ophthalmology training on the Sydney Eye Hospital program, he pursued subspecialty fellowships in paediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, and visual electrophysiology in Australia and the United Kingdom. As a consultant ophthalmologist, he manages clinics for glaucoma, cataract, and inherited retinal diseases at Sydney Eye Hospital. At Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network Westmead, he leads inherited retinal disease clinics and subspecialized paediatric multidisciplinary clinics. Professor Grigg heads clinical visual electrophysiology and multimodal ophthalmic imaging services across Save Sight Institute, Sydney Eye Hospital campus, and Children’s Hospital Westmead, supporting diagnosis, genetic testing interpretation, and management of complex eye conditions.

His research specializes in inherited retinal diseases, electrophysiology of the visual system, health economic impacts of inherited eye diseases, and development of novel clinical trial endpoints. A founding member of Ocular Gene and Cell Therapies Australia, he has facilitated gene therapy implementation for RPE65-related retinopathy and serves as principal investigator for trials targeting Stargardt disease, Usher syndrome, achromatopsia, and retinitis pigmentosa. Professor Grigg has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters, including 'Outcome Measures in Juvenile X-linked Retinoschisis' (2020), 'The electroretinogram in the genomics era: outer retinal disorders' (2021), and 'Biomarkers in Usher syndrome: ultra-widefield fundus autofluorescence imaging' (2020). He is Paediatric Ophthalmology Section Editor for the Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology since 2017 and Section Editor for Documenta Ophthalmologica. Since 2008, as Postgraduate Coursework Program Director for the Discipline of Ophthalmology, he has expanded offerings in ophthalmic basic sciences, international ophthalmology, refractive surgery, microsurgery, paediatric ophthalmology, and visual electrophysiology. A pioneer in laser cataract surgery since 2011 after training in the USA, he contributes to clinical innovation and education in ophthalmology.
