About Joe

Dr Joe Ren is a Lecturer in Management Accounting in the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. Holding a PhD from Monash University, he adopts a multidisciplinary approach that integrates accounting, management, and broader societal concerns. His primary research interests encompass the role of management accounting and control systems in governance and decision-making processes. He investigates accountability mechanisms, performance evaluation, and diversity initiatives within public institutions, alongside sustainability issues. Furthermore, Ren explores how accounting practices shape labour relations, professional identities, and the nature of work itself. Proficient in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, he draws upon sociological and philosophical frameworks to analyze how accounting functions across varied organizational and cultural settings.

Ren's scholarly contributions have been published in prestigious outlets, including Academy of Management Learning & Education and Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, both ranked A* in the ABDC journal list. Notable publications include "Bureaucratization of Worth: How Business Schools Demonstrate Scholarly Impact" (2025, co-authored with Vesty, Zhang, and Situ), which examines impact demonstration in business schools; "Umbrella protectors? Analysing valuing, hybridity and compromises for Chinese middle managers" (2024, with Situ and Vesty), addressing valuation conflicts in hybrid organizations; and "Integrated reporting as a test of worth" (2018, with Vesty and Ji), probing integrated reporting practices. Other significant works include a book chapter on "CSR Reporting Practices of Chinese MNCs" (2021, with Ting), and recent reports on merit protection frameworks in public sector recruitment (2025, with Williamson et al.), stemming from a project he leads funded by the Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZOG). Ren also serves as Associate Editor for Chinese Management Studies published by Emerald, enhancing the visibility of management research in Chinese contexts. His contributions span fields such as accounting, auditing and accountability, management accounting, and public administration.
