Associate Professor Joanne Evans is an archival and recordkeeping researcher and educator in the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University. She leads the Digital Transformation group in the Department of Human Centred Computing. Her academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Archives and Recordkeeping from Monash University awarded in 2007, a Graduate Diploma in Software Development from RMIT University in 2001, a Graduate Diploma in Information Services from RMIT University in 1995, a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry from the Australian National University in 1988, and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash University in 2012. Evans has held teaching roles as Lecturer and Chief Examiner for several units, including FIT2074 Technology, information and organisations; FIT3072/FIT5107 Managing business records; FIT3121/FIT5087 Archival systems; FIT5104 IKM Professional practice; FIT5107 Recordkeeping Informatics; FIT5088 Information and Knowledge Management Systems; and FIT5205 Data in Society.
Evans' research interests encompass archival systems, community archives, cultural informatics, participatory design, recordkeeping informatics, recordkeeping metadata, and records continuum. She received an ARC Future Fellowship from 2015 to 2018 for the project Connecting the Disconnected: Co-designing Integrated and Inclusive Recordkeeping and Archival Networks, through which she established the Recordkeeping and the Rights of the Child Research Program. This initiative develops participatory design and research strategies to create dynamic evidence and memory management frameworks supportive of rights in records, particularly for individuals from childhood out-of-home care. Key publications include "Self-determination and archival autonomy: advocating activism" (Evans, McKemmish, Daniels, McCarthy, 2015), "Recordkeeping Informatics for a Networked Age" (Upward, Reed, Oliver, Evans, 2018), "Create once, use many times: the clever use of recordkeeping metadata for multiple archival purposes" (Evans, McKemmish, Bhoday, 2005), "Recordkeeping informatics: re-figuring a discipline in crisis with a single minded approach" (Upward, Reed, Oliver, Evans, 2013), and "Participatory information governance: Transforming recordkeeping for childhood out-of-home care" (Evans, McKemmish, Rolan, 2019). Her contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals 3, 4, and 16. Evans is a member of the International Council on Archives, the Australian Society of Archivists, and the Australian Library and Information Association.
