Dr. Jiong Hu serves as Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Programs in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He holds a Ph.D. in Geotechnical and Materials Engineering from Iowa State University (2005), an M.Eng. in Materials from Southeast University, China (1999), and a B.Eng. in Construction Materials from Southeast University, China (1996). Before joining UNL, he was faculty at Texas State University, earning awards such as Presidential Distinction Awards for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities (2014), College Achievement Awards for Excellence in Teaching (2014), Excellence in Service (2015), and Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities (2011).
His research interests encompass sustainable concrete technologies, including ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC), incorporation of recycled materials and agricultural/forestry wastes, fresh concrete rheology, multi-scale material characterization, concrete pavements, 3D printing materials, cellular concrete, and bioinspired cement-based materials. Dr. Hu has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on over forty research projects. He has published over fifty peer-reviewed journal papers and technical reports. Key publications include "Engineering and Environmental Performance of Eco-Efficient Self Consolidating Concrete (Eco-SCC) with Low Powder Content and Recycled Concrete Aggregate" (Journal of Sustainable Cement-Based Materials, 2016), "An Alternate Test Method for the Void Content of Pervious Concrete" (Advances in Civil Engineering Materials, 2016), "The Effect of the Cementitious Paste Thickness on the Performance of Pervious Concrete" (Construction and Building Materials, 2015), and "Influence of Cement Fineness and Water-to-Cement Ratio on Mortar Early-Age Heat of Hydration and Set Times" (Construction and Building Materials, 2014). At UNL, he received the College of Engineering Research Excellence Award (2021), Distinguished Teaching Award and Holling Family Master Teacher Award (2020), and Holling Family Distinguished Teaching/Advising/Mentoring Award (2019). He holds leadership positions including Chairman of ACI Committee 238 (Workability of Fresh Concrete), Secretary of ACI Committee 555 (Concrete with Recycled Materials), and former President of ACI Nebraska Chapter.
