Conjoint Associate Professor Jim Scurry, FRCPA, holds the position of Senior Staff Specialist in anatomical pathology at NSW Health Pathology’s John Hunter Hospital laboratory in Newcastle, where he has worked since 2010. Prior to this appointment, he served as an anatomical pathologist at Melbourne’s Mercy Hospital for Women. In 2011, he joined the University of Newcastle as Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing. Throughout his career, Scurry has emphasized teaching in gynaecological and dermatological pathology, passing on his expertise to students and colleagues. His research efforts are clinically based, developed in close collaboration with clinicians, and center on advancing diagnostic accuracy and understanding in vulvovaginal conditions.
Scurry has authored over 190 research papers, significantly impacting the field of anatomical pathology, particularly in women’s health. Key publications include “Review of terminology of precursors of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma” (Modern Pathology, 2006), “Normal Vulvar Histology: Variation by Site” (Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease, 2016), “Classic and Hypertrophic Vulvar Lichen Planus” (Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease, 2018), “Early changes of endometrial neoplasia revealed by loss of PTEN and 4HNE” (Modern Pathology, 2016), “Vulval superficial myofibroblastoma with lymphocytic and eosinophilic infiltrate” (BMJ Case Reports, 2023), and “Lichen Sclerosus - ISSVD Practical Guide to Diagnosis and Management” (2024). His work addresses critical areas such as lichen sclerosus, vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia, squamous cell carcinoma, and related clinicopathologic entities. Scurry is a founding member and former Board member of the Australian and New Zealand Vulvovaginal Society (ANZVS). He also co-chaired the International Society for Vulvovaginal Disease’s Difficult Pathology Diagnostic Committee from 2019 to 2021. For his contributions to anatomical pathology, women’s health, and professional societies, he received the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours.
