About Jia

Dr Jia Doulton is an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey. She qualified as a doctor with an MA in Physiology and Psychology from the University of Oxford in 1985 and an MBBS from King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1986. Her further qualifications include an MSc in Community Medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1990, a PGCE from the University of Surrey Institute of Education in 2020, Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health (FFPH, elected following membership in 1992), and Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators (FAcadMEd) in 2022.

Dr Doulton's career commenced as a research assistant to Professor Eva Alberman of Clinical Epidemiology at the London Hospital Medical College during her medical training. She completed specialist training in Epidemiology and Public Health as a registrar and senior registrar in central London, followed by a career break. She subsequently developed medical education expertise in the Department of Primary Care and Public Health at the University of Southampton medical school, where she taught medical students and reviewed the public health curriculum. Since 2017 at the University of Surrey, she has served as Programme Director for the postgraduate Physician Associate Studies (PGDip), establishing the programme and achieving outstanding results in the PA National Assessment. From 2020 to 2022, she worked with the General Medical Council project team to develop a new curriculum for PA education, representing PA course leaders from across the UK. In January 2024, she took up the role of Lead for Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Her research specializations include epidemiology and public health, medical education, and Physician Associate education and curriculum development. Key publications comprise 'Feasibility of an automated interview grounded in multiple mini interview (MMI) methodology for selection into the health professions: an international multimethod evaluation' (BMJ Open, 2022, with Callwood et al.) and 'Congenital abnormalities in legal abortions at 20 weeks’ gestation or later' (Lancet, 1984, with Alberman et al.). She co-chairs the Education subgroup of the Physician Associate Schools' Council since 2022, serves on the South-East School of Physician Associates steering group, and is a member of the Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (CAIPE).
