Dr Jessie Seymour is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University. Her academic qualifications comprise a Diploma in Journalism, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Southern Cross University, a Graduate Diploma in Education from Southern Cross University, and a PhD from Southern Cross University awarded in 2015. The title of her doctoral thesis is 'Phoenixes, Mockingjays and Chameleons: Youth Re-empowerment in Contemporary Young Adult Literature'. This work addresses children's and young adult literature, with keywords including education, empowerment, and aetonormativity.
Dr Seymour's research interests include children's literature, young adult literature, transmedia storytelling, fan studies, and aetonormativity. She has published peer-reviewed journal articles such as '“Murder me...become a man”: establishing the masculine care circle in young adult dystopia' in Children's Literature in Education (2016); 'Young adult writing: setting the scene' in TEXT Special Issue (2015); ''Youth theory': a response to aetonormativity' in TEXT Special Issue (2015); 'As we draw near mountains: nature and beauty in the hearts of dwarves' (2015); 'Harry Potter and the house-elf rebellion: class, loyalty and the limits of discipline' in The Looking Glass: New Perspectives on Children's Literature (2012); and 'Interpretive practice and redefining meaning in Harry Potter fanfiction' in New Academia (2014). Previously associated with the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southern Cross University, she participated in the Three Minute Thesis University final as a PhD candidate in 2012. Dr Seymour has contributed to the Australasian Association of Writing Programs as Memberships Liaison and co-edited calls for papers on young adult writing for TEXT journal.
