About Jerzy

Professor Jerzy Lis serves as the Rector of AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow since 2020. He has been associated with the university since 1973, beginning his studies at the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics in materials engineering, from which he graduated in 1978. He earned his PhD in technical sciences in materials engineering in 1986, post-doctoral qualifications (DSc) in 1994 or 1995, and the title of full professor of technical sciences in 2000. His career at AGH includes roles as Head of the Department of Ceramics and Refractory Materials from 1997 to 2020, Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics from 2002 to 2008 and 2012 to 2020, and Vice-Rector for Cooperation from 2008 to 2012. In 1989, he worked as a visiting professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo and has delivered lectures at institutions such as TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Osaka University, Hokkaido University, Alfred University, and the University of British Columbia. He currently holds positions including President of the Supervisory Board of the Krakow Centre for Innovative Technology INNOAGH and Vice-President of the Krakow Technology Park.

Professor Lis specializes in materials engineering and chemical technology, with a focus on advanced and traditional ceramic materials, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), properties of ceramics and composites, and their applications. He pioneered SHS research in Poland, authoring key publications including 'Solid combustion synthesis of Ti3SiC2' (1989, Journal of the European Ceramic Society), 'Ti3SiC-based materials prepared by HIP-SHS techniques' (1995, Materials Letters), and 'Synthesis of ternary titanium aluminum carbides using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis technique' (2001, Journal of the American Ceramic Society). His scholarly output encompasses approximately 400 papers, 6 books, 180 conference presentations (125 international), and 18 patents. He has supervised 13 doctoral dissertations and led 12 research projects funded by the State Committee for Scientific Research and the Ministry of Education and Science, along with 16 national and 3 international projects. An Ordinary Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, he is also a member of the World Academy of Ceramics (since 2002), Fellow of the European Ceramic Society and American Ceramic Society, and serves on numerous committees, scientific councils, and editorial boards such as Ceramics International. His honors include the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2019), Bridge Building Award from the American Ceramic Society, Golden Engineer (2016), and Silver Medal of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
