Associate Professor Jenny Lye is a Reader in the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. She holds a PhD, a Master's degree by coursework, and a Bachelor's degree, all from the University of Canterbury. With more than 30 years of experience teaching econometrics at the University of Melbourne, she has received numerous Dean's Certificates of Excellence in Teaching. Lye has also presented short econometric courses for the Federal Australian Treasury, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment. She co-authored the textbook Introductory Econometrics: Asia Pacific Edition, 2nd edition, with J. Wooldridge, M. Wadud, and R. Joyeux.
Jenny Lye's research specializations encompass theoretical and applied econometrics, statistics, statistical analysis of issues in tertiary education, and cultural economics. She maintains an extensive international publication record, featuring highly cited works such as Introductory econometrics: Asia pacific edition with online study tools 12 months (Cengage AU, 2016), An evaluation of collaborative problem solving for learning economics (The Journal of Economic Education, 2000), Attendance at Australian rules football: A panel study (Applied Economics, 1992), Systematic influences on teaching evaluations: The case for caution (Australian Economic Papers, 2007), Robust estimation, nonnormalities, and generalized exponential distributions (Journal of the American Statistical Association, 1993), Alcohol consumption, smoking and wages (Applied Economics, 2004), and A geometric comparison of the delta and Fieller confidence intervals (The American Statistician, 2010). Her recent publications include The Impact of Gender on Incomes in the Visual Arts in Australia (2025), Gaming after lockdowns: return to the slots (2025), and multiple chapters in Visual Arts Work (2025), alongside participation in the research grant project Ambitious and Fair: Strategies for a Sustainable Visual Arts Sector (2021-2023). Lye contributes to the academic community as an editorial board member for the journal Econometrics, editor of the Perspective section in the Australian Economic Review, and member of the Economic Society of Australia.
