Always kind, respectful, and approachable.
Jeff Burrow is the Team Leader of Plumbing and Gas Services at the University of Otago's Property Services division in Dunedin. He leads a team of registered and certified plumbers and gasfitters responsible for coordinating and delivering all core plumbing and gas services on campus. These services encompass new installations and alterations to existing systems, repairs, maintenance, and servicing of hot and cold water supplies. The team also manages water filter maintenance and supply, roof and gutter cleaning and repairs, design consultation, gas safety checks, repairs and installations including appliance maintenance, IQP backflow prevention specifying, testing and repair, and provides a 24/7 call-out service for urgent plumbing, drainage issues, blocked toilets, hot and cold water problems, flooding, leaks, as well as urgent mechanical issues and repairs to buildings across the campus. They pride themselves on delivering quality service within required time frames through a single point of contact, ensuring well-planned and cost-effective maintenance of the university's built environment.
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Jeff Burrow is actively involved in community service as the Chief Fire Officer of the Waitati Volunteer Fire Brigade and a member of the executive of the Master Plumbers Association. He has undertaken a personal project to convert an unproductive, overgrown area on his property into a flourishing mini eco-sanctuary. Over three years, he cleared gorse and blackberry brambles, and with support from the Halo Project by Landscape Connections Trust—which provided trees, surrounds, and weed mat—he organized over 50 volunteers, including family, friends, and workmates, to plant 500 native trees in one day on his birthday. Six months later, the land is transforming, and he is collaborating with neighbors to clear adjoining land and create a community walking track safer than the nearby road. Jeff credits his family for instilling the value of giving back; his father Neil Burrow was a contractor at the University of Otago, and his son Keegan Burrow is a PhD graduate from Otago now teaching at Lincoln University. Jeff views these efforts as "the right thing to do," finding his "happy place" in keeping busy and doing good for the community and environment.
