JB Begue is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator for the Deaf Studies program in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Towson University. He holds a Master of Arts in Sign Language Education from Gallaudet University, earned in 2014, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Gallaudet University, completed in 2009. Originally from Ohio, Begue has served in his current roles at Towson University, where he advises students on the Deaf Studies major during office hours by appointment from locations LA 5309 and LA 5339, accessible via video phone at 410-561-6186.
Begue's areas of expertise include creating an ASL immersion environment on campus, ASL pedagogy, second language acquisition, academic ASL, and collaboration with the Deaf community. As an instructor, he focuses on building safe spaces for students to maximize their signing performance through commitment, creativity, and enthusiasm, having engaged with people of diverse backgrounds and learning needs for years. Selected as a 2019-20 Diversity and Inclusion Faculty Fellow, his project addressed Martha’s Vineyard Allyship in the College of Liberal Arts. Begue directs the Deaf Studies program and supports the American Sign Language community, including affiliated roles in campus living-learning communities. He has pursued interests in signed music, producing videos and contributing to related efforts such as workshops on signed music emergence.
