Associate Professor Janice Bass is a distinguished educator and researcher in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Griffith University, where she has contributed for over 14 years as part of the Midwifery@Griffith team. Holding a Doctor of Philosophy from Griffith University awarded in 2022, a Master of Midwifery Education, a Bachelor of Social Science, Registered Midwife credentials, Registered Nurse qualification, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy status, she has focused her career on advancing midwifery education. Her professional journey includes roles as a midwifery lecturer and Associate Professor, emphasizing innovative teaching practices that prioritize transformative learning for student midwives. Bass has been instrumental in the Bachelor of Midwifery program, promoting continuity of care experiences and blended learning technologies that place women at the center of maternity care.
Bass's research specializations center on holistic reflection, critical pedagogy, and the humanisation of childbirth within midwifery education. She developed the Bass Model of Holistic Reflection to facilitate transformative learning in midwifery students, a framework introduced in her seminal 2017 publication 'Development of a model of holistic reflection to facilitate transformative learning in student midwives' in Women and Birth, which has garnered over 113 citations. Other key publications include 'Midwifery students' experiences and expectations of using a model of holistic reflection' (Women and Birth, 2020, 45 citations), 'Developing reflective capacities in midwifery students' (Midwifery, 2019, 61 citations), and 'Humanisation of childbirth: 7. The role of critical pedagogy in midwifery education' (Women and Birth, 2022). Her work has influenced midwifery curricula, embedding critical thinking and reflection practices. Bass received the Griffith University Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Teaching Award, the institution's highest teaching accolade, and was part of the team awarded the 2017 Australian Awards for University Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for the innovative Midwifery program design.
