About James

James J. Beatty is Professor of Physics and Professor of Astronomy at The Ohio State University, currently serving as Chair of the Department of Physics. He earned an A.B. in Chemistry in 1982, an S.M. in Physics in 1984, and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1986, all from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on experimental particle astrophysics in the realm of Space Science, with key interests in astrophysics, cosmic rays, and neutrinos. As a leader in the field, Beatty directs the Astronomy and Space Chemistry (ASC) lab group and is affiliated with the Center for Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (CCAPP).

Beatty contributes to pioneering experiments such as the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, Pierre Auger Observatory, Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations (PUEO), High Energy Light Isotope Experiment (HELIX), and Radar Echo Telescope, advancing detection of ultra-high energy cosmic rays, composition studies, and neutrino astrophysics. Key publications include 'Neutrino emission from the direction of the blazar TXS 0506+056 prior to the IceCube-170922A alert' (Science, 2018, IceCube Collaboration). In 2016, NASA appointed him to the Physics of the Cosmos Program Analysis Group Executive Committee. His lab has achieved the Office of Environmental Health and Safety Dean's List in 2023 and 2024. Beatty mentors graduate students and delivers colloquia on cosmic rays and cosmic neutrinos.
