Jake Schapper serves as a Lecturer in Urban and Regional Planning in the School of Design and the Built Environment, Faculty of Humanities, at Curtin University, a position he has held since 2008. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Urban and Regional Planning from Curtin University. His teaching portfolio encompasses urban design, transport planning, and community engagement, with a strong emphasis on practical application through international study tours and field trips organized under the New Colombo Plan. Schapper has led student groups to locations including India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Japan, facilitating hands-on learning in global planning contexts. He also coordinates logistics for projects like the Lakhnu Village initiative, where he served as Planning Coordinator, exploring ethnic minority communities' engagement with urban environments. In addition to academia, Schapper maintains involvement in private practice, contributing to 12 community forums in Perth focused on public transport aspirations.
Schapper's commitment to teaching excellence is evidenced by his inclusion in the 2023 Curtin Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award-winning team for the Teaching Excellence category, recognizing The Light & Shadow Project, which investigated haptic experiences impacted by digital translation. This collaborative effort, led by Dr Anne Farren and including Dr Qassim Saad, highlights his innovative pedagogical approaches. Furthermore, he received the 2023 Planning Institute of Australia (WA Division) Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service, commended for inspiring students, fostering intellectual curiosity, prioritizing well-being, and preparing future planning leaders. As a Member of the Planning Institute of Australia (MPIA), Schapper's research contributions include co-authoring 'Understanding Quality in Planning Consultancy: A Review and Synthesis of the Literature' with Sam McLeod in the Journal of Planning Education and Research (2020), and 'Conceptualizing freight generation for transport and land use planning' with Sam McLeod and others. His work extends to influences on transit-oriented development and planning consultancy, enhancing discourse in urban policy and practice.
