About J. Nicholas

J. Nicholas Laneman is a Professor of Electrical Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. He directs SpectrumX, the National Science Foundation's first Spectrum Initiative Innovation Center, and co-directs the Notre Dame Wireless Institute. Laneman joined the University of Notre Dame faculty in August 2002 shortly after receiving his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2019 to 2022, he served as Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He is also a Faculty Affiliate of iNDustry Labs and a Fellow of the Pulte Institute for Global Development and the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values. His research interests include wireless system design, radio spectrum access, technology standards and intellectual property, and regulatory policy. As principal investigator, Laneman has secured over $34 million in research funding.

Laneman's contributions to wireless communications have earned him prestigious honors, including election as an IEEE Fellow in 2014, the 2018 IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, the 2006 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and the 2006 NSF CAREER Award. He was recognized as a Thomson Reuters ISI Highly Cited Researcher in 2010 and 2015 and has received three conference best paper awards. Author or co-author of over 155 publications, including 47 journal articles and invited book chapters, Laneman's highly influential work includes the 2004 paper 'Cooperative diversity in wireless networks: Efficient protocols and outage behavior,' co-authored with D. N. C. Tse and G. W. Wornell, which has received more than 15,000 citations. He is co-inventor on eight U.S. patents with others pending. Laneman has held significant leadership positions, such as General Co-Chair of the 2017 IEEE International Symposium on Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks (DySPAN), Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications, Guest Editor for special issues of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory and IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, and the first Online Editor for the IEEE Information Theory Society, where he also served on the Board of Governors.
