Darby's research focuses on periodontics and implant dentistry, encompassing periodontal regeneration, periodontal surgery, osseointegration, bone regeneration, ridge preservation techniques for implant therapy, risk factors for periodontitis and peri-implantitis, and the microbiology of periodontal disease, including the role of pathogens like Porphyromonas gingivalis. Leading the Darby Group at the Melbourne Dental School, his laboratory investigates growth and development, the oral microbiome in health and disease, and clinical research themes such as oral inflammation. His scholarly impact is substantial, with over 7,300 citations on Google Scholar and 4,479 citations across 76 publications on ResearchGate. Key publications include 'A prospective clinical study of non-submerged immediate implants: clinical outcomes and esthetic results' (2007, Clinical Oral Implants Research, 694 citations), 'Ridge preservation techniques for implant therapy' (2009, International Journal of Oral Maxillofac Implants, 510 citations), 'Risk factors for periodontitis & peri-implantitis' (2022, Periodontology 2000, 392 citations), 'Immediate implant placement postextraction without flap elevation' (2009, Journal of Periodontology, 381 citations), and 'Progression of chronic periodontitis can be predicted by the levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola in subgingival plaque' (2009, Oral Microbiology and Immunology, 300 citations).
